Grand Rapids Heartside barricade murals

Barricades

Concrete Barricades | Grand Rapids, MI

Sign | Lettering

In 2021, Grand Rapids turned its streets into social spaces using heavy concrete barricades. They were functional, but they were eyesores. Lions and Rabbits Center for the Arts needed a way to give these four distinct neighborhoods (Downtown, Heartside, Bridge St., and Monroe North) a cohesive, welcoming identity that humanized the cold concrete.

I designed a series of custom stencils for each neighborhood, along with "Welcome" and "Bienvenidos" marks to anchor the spaces. This wasn't about me painting a mural or a sign, it was about creating a stencil kit that allowed the community to transform grey concrete into a vibrant neighborhood identity.

Design by Slowpoke Studio. Execution by the Lions and Rabbits crew. Photos by Dominic Krupp.
